About World Veterinary Day
World Veterinary Day was instigated by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) in 2000 to be celebrated annually on the last Saturday in April.
Apart from their well-known role as animal doctors, veterinarians create prevention and control programs against infectious diseases, including those transmissible to humans.
Much more than that, be it for food security, poverty alleviation, prevention and management of risks at the animal-human interface, animal welfare, scientific research or political commitment, veterinarians operate in all sectors of society.
Starting in 2019, the WVA has partnered with Health for Animals, the global animal medicines association, on the World Veterinary Day Award, which honors one WVA member’s activities related to the theme for that year's World Veterinary Day.
