About Saint John the Evangelist's Day
The second day of Christmas is known in many countries as St. Stephen's Day, commemorating the first Christian martyr. The third day of Christmas honors another important early Christian figure, St. John the Evangelist.
St. John was born in Bethsaida, and was a fisherman, like his brother James. He was called while mending his nets to follow Jesus. He became the beloved disciple of Jesus. He wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles and the Apocalypse.
The other famous John in the Bible was St. John the Baptist. His feast day is June 24th and a popular midsummer holiday in northern Europe.
