About Beaufort Scale Day
A day to honour the British naval officer, Sir Francis Beaufort, who in 1806 devised a scale of wind force from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane) that was based on observation, not requiring any special instruments.
The scale was adopted for international use in 1874 and has since been enlarged and refined.
Beaufort was born at Flower Hill, Meath, Ireland on May 7th 1774, and died in Brighton, England on December 17th, 1857.
