About National Healthcare Decisions Day
Since 2008, independent organizations have used April 16th for a collective national effort focused on advance care planning. Advance care planning is a process of thinking about and sharing your wishes for future health care.
NHDD was founded in 2008 by Nathan Kottkamp, a Virginia-based health care lawyer, to provide clear, concise, and consistent information on healthcare decision-making to both the public and providers/facilities through the widespread availability and dissemination of simple, free, and uniform tools (not just forms) to guide the process.
The date was chosen to be the day after Americans file their tax return - building on the old adage that there are two things certain in life - death and taxes. So the day after you sort your taces for the year, think about your health decisions.
