About National Dance Like a Chicken Day
Though often topping the polls for the most annoying song of all time, "The Chicken Dance" has become a tradition at Oktoberfests across the world. The Oktoberfest Zinzinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio, holds a "World's Largest Chicken Dance" annually. There were 48,000 participants in 1994.
Despite being associated with a distinctly German tradition, the Chicken Dance song is actually Swiss. It was created by Werner Thomas from Davos, Switzerland in the 1950s. It was called “Der Ententanz”, or the Duck Dance.
The song, sometimes also known as the Birdie Song is accompanied by a series of movements, the song soon became popular across Europe, and especially in the United States, where it was performed at parties and weddings.
The dance mimics the movements of a chicken and includes flapping of arms and wriggling of the body.
