About National Chocolate Cake Day
The first chocolate cake was made in 1765 when a doctor, an Irish immigrant and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill. They converted the building into a chocolate factory where they ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones to make a thick syrup. The liquid was poured into molds shaped like cakes, which were meant to be transformed into a beverage.
Many years later in the 1800s, an Austrian chef created a special dessert for a prince. He spread jam between two layers of chocolate dough and poured chocolate frosting over it. The modern chocolate cake was born.
The first chocolate cake mix wasn’t invented until the late 1920s by a company called O. Duff and Sons. In 1948, Pillsbury released the first instant cake mix.
