About National Book Month
Do you enjoy reading? Maybe you’ve wanted to get back into reading or even read for fun and enjoyment for the first time. October is the perfect time for reading since it's National Book Month.
According to the Pew Research Center, there has been a decline in the number of 9- and 13-year-olds reading for fun. Nine-year-olds declined by 11 percent, with a 13 percent decline for 13-year-olds in 2019-2020. That number hasn’t been this low since the 1980s.
The first National Book Month was in 2003, established by the National Book Foundation (NBF).
NBF is a not-for-profit organization created in the late 1980s by sponsors of the National Book Awards, which started in the 1950s. The NBF was created to oversee the National Book Awards. Its mission is to “celebrate the best literature published in the United States, expand its audience, and ensure that books have a prominent place in our culture." Every year, the award honors the best literature in five categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young people’s literature and translated literature.
