Mabon, which coincides with the Autumnal Equinox, is one of the four pagan Quarter Days, along with Litha (Summer Solstice), Ostara (Vernal Equinox), and Yule (Winter Solstice).
It is observed by those who follow Wicca (modern witchcraft) and Neopaganism.
Also called Alban Elfed, Mabon is one of the "Lesser Sabbats" during the Wiccan year. Mabon marks the second harvest as nature prepares for the coming of winter.
The name Mabon comes from the Welsh God, who was the son of the Earth Mother Goddess.
What is the Autumnal Equinox?
The Autumnal Equinox is the time of year when the sun crosses the celestial equator, marking the change in seasons from summer to fall. It's always celebrated on September 22nd, either at the moment the sun crosses the equator or at the moment of sunset. The equinox is the exact moment when day and night are of equal duration all over the planet. It's also the first day of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
