Chardonnay Day dates back to 2010 when it was instigated on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend by Rick Bakas.
Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety used in the production of white wine. The variety originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France, but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand.
The Chardonnay grape is the most widely planted grape variety in the world, with over 10 million acres (40,000 km2) planted worldwide. It is grown in every major wine producing country with France and the United States being the largest producers, though Chardonnay is also widely planted in Australia and South Africa.
It is known as a highly versatile grape that can be used in the production of white wines ranging from dry and austere (such as the Chablis region of France) to oaked and buttery (such as the Chardonnays of California).
