About International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation
Recognizing that injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons is a violation of the human rights of girls and women and violates a person's rights to health, security, and physical integrity; the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment; and the right to life when the procedure results in death, the General Assembly designated Feb 6 as an annual day of zero tolerance for this practice.
The UN urges that this day promote awareness-raising campaigns and concrete actions against female genital mutilations (Res 67/146 of Mar 5, 2013).
"On this Day of Zero Tolerance, I call for increased, concerted and global action to end female genital mutilation and fully uphold the human rights of all women and girls." — UN Secretary-General António Guterres
