About Porktober
What is Porktober?
October is Porktober, a month-long campaign to celebrate the quality, versatility and affordability of pork. National Craft Butchers are joining Scottish Craft Butchers this year to promote the nutritional and value attributes of pork in support of British pig farmers.
The “Porktober” initiative was launched in 2022 to support Scotland's pig producers and was expanded in 2023.
Why Pork?
Pork is renowned for its high protein content, essential for muscle growth and repair. Moreover, it contains essential vitamins and minerals, such as thiamine, zinc, vitamin B12, iron, and selenium. These nutrients play crucial roles in supporting metabolism, immune function, and overall well-being.
Compared to beef and lamb, pork tends to be lower in saturated fat and calories, especially when opting for lean cuts like tenderloin or loin chops. Moderation is key, but choosing lean cuts of pork can be a healthier choice for individuals aiming to manage their fat intake.
Contrary to popular belief, pork can be part of a healthy diet. Its nutrient composition supports various bodily functions, contributing to muscle strength, brain health, and immune system function. Additionally, pork is an excellent source of high-quality protein, making it a valuable option for those looking to build or maintain muscle mass.
Certain cuts of pork, like tenderloin, can be notably lean, making them an ideal choice for individuals watching their cholesterol levels or seeking heart-healthy options. When prepared and consumed in a balanced diet, lean pork can serve as a nutritious component contributing to overall health and well-being.
Varieties of Pork
Pork offers a wide array of cuts, each with its unique taste, texture, and culinary applications. Some of the most popular cuts include:
Tenderloin: One of the leanest and most tender cuts of pork. It is versatile and can be grilled, roasted, or used in stir-fries.
Loin Chops: Another lean cut that can be grilled, pan-fried, or baked. It's flavorful and adaptable to various seasonings and cooking methods.
Spareribs: Often used in barbecue dishes, spareribs are known for their rich flavour and tenderness. While they have more fat, they can be enjoyed in moderation as an indulgent treat.
Shoulder: These cuts are slightly fattier but extremely flavorful. They are commonly used for slow-cooking methods like braising or roasting.
Ham: Typically cured or smoked, ham offers a distinctive flavour and is a favourite in sandwiches, soups, and holiday meals.
