About Football Shirt Friday
On Football Shirt Friday, the Bobby Moore Fund is calling on people across the country to show their support by wearing their favourite football shirts, sharing selfies on social media using the hashtag #footballshirtfriday, and donating to the fund.
First started in 2013, the campaign is aimed at tackling bowel cancer in memory of Bobby Moore OBE, the legendary World Cup-winning England football captain, who died of the disease 30 years ago.
Cancer Research UK, in connection with the Bobby Moore Fund, established this idea in an attempt to raise awareness and money for the fight against cancer.
Bobby Moore was just 51 years old when he died. Shortly after his death in 1993, Bobby’s widow Stephanie Moore OBE set up the Bobby Moore Fund to raise money for pioneering bowel cancer research. Since the fund was set up, bowel cancer mortality rates have fallen by over 30%. However, with 46 people losing their lives to the disease every day in the UK, we still have a long way to go.
Football Shirt Friday usually takes place during April, which is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
