About Armed Forces Day
The Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was first celebrated in 1993 in accordance with the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada. The date of the holiday is timed to the adoption of the Law of Ukraine On the Armed Forces of Ukraine from December 6th 1991.
After the proclamation of independence, the country began preparing the legal framework for the creation of a national armed forces. The formation of the national army was accompanied by the reorganization of the armed forces of the former USSR, creation of new structures and management bodies.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine consist of the Land Forces, Air Forces, Special Operations Forces, Naval Forces, regular and contract army, border guards, internal troops. Each of these units has its own holiday, but December 6th is a common holiday for all the country's military personnel.
Events to show the importance of the army to the country are usually held on this day. President traditionally congratulates the servicemen; a flower-laying ceremony is also held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Concerts, exhibitions and other events are also held.
