Magtymguly was a Turkmen spiritual leader and philosophical poet, who was born on 18 May 1724. He made significant efforts to secure independence and autonomy for his people in the 18th century.

Until recently Poetry of Magtymguly Pyragy Day was celebrated on May 18th, Constitution Day, which was also the birthday of legendary 18th century Turkmen poet Magtumguly. Coincidentally, June 27th happens to be President Berdymukhammedov’s birthday
