About Students Day
On 25 January (St. Tatiana's Day) 1755, Empress Elizabeth signed a decree founding Russia’s first university, Moscow State University. Since then, Tatiana has gained the status of the patron saint of students and 25th January has been known as Student’s Day.
The date also coincides with the end of exams and the beginning of winter holidays, giving students further cause for celebration. It was decreed as a national holiday in 2005.
Tatiana was a Christian martyr in 3rd-century Rome during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates St. Tatiana's feast on 12 January Julian, which corresponds to 25 January Gregorian.
