About Sandwich Month
August is the month dedicated to John Montagu’s (the 4th Earl of Sandwich) famed 18th century creation, the sandwich.
Lord Sandwich, was a frequent gambler, often spending hours on end at the gambling table. A rumour in a contemporaneous travel book called Tour to London by Pierre-Jean Grosley is that he wanted something he could eat without having to leave the table, so he was provided with beef slices and cheese in between two pieces of bread. When others copied this order and made it a trend, the sandwich was born.
According to Merriam-Webster, a sandwich is defined as two pieces of bread with something (such as meat, peanut butter, etc.) between them, although that definition has been stretched over time as food makers have attempted to redefine what can be a sandwich.
For instance, a hot dog meets the technical definition of a sandwich.
