This isn't another food holiday created by multinationals. Pretzel Sunday is actually a religious day associated with the period before Easter. 

In some parts of Europe, particularly in Germany and Austria, pretzels are associated with Lent, the period of fasting and penance that leads up to Easter. During this time, meat and other indulgent foods are avoided, and pretzels were a traditional food that could be eaten without breaking the Lenten fast.

The shape of the pretzel is also said to have a religious significance. The three holes in the pretzel are said to represent the Holy Trinity, and the twisted shape is thought to resemble arms crossed in prayer. Some people even believe that the shape of the pretzel is meant to represent a child's arms folded in prayer.
