About National White Wine Day
White wine is made with white grapes. Some winemakers use sweeter black grapes. The juice made from these grapes is made colorless by removing the skin before fermentation.
White wine has antioxidants which can be really useful in getting rid of harmful toxins in the body. Various studies conducted show that white wine is rich in antioxidants as they protect your cells.
Popular Varieties of White Wine
White wine varieties are a diverse bunch, ranging from dry and acidic to sweet and smooth. Some of the most popular white wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Moscato. These wines can be enjoyed either on their own or paired with a variety of dishes.
Chardonnay
The Chardonnay grape is the most widely planted grape variety in the world, with over 10 million acres (40,000 km2) planted worldwide. It is grown in every major wine-producing country with France and the United States being the largest producers, though Chardonnay is also widely planted in Australia and South Africa. It is known as a highly versatile grape that can be used in the production of white wines ranging from dry and austere (such as the Chablis region of France) to oaked and buttery (such as the Chardonnays of California).
Sauvignon Blanc
A versatile, dry white wine with strong herbal flavors. It has notes of grass and green apple. It pairs well with seafood, chicken, and pork. Sauvignon Blanc is an easy wine with a relatively short history. The grape was first planted in France in the early 17th century. It was originally named Sémillion Blanc, which is a reference to the French town Sèméac. It was then renamed Sauvignon Blanc in the mid 1800s. The name Sauvignon Blanc comes from the French words for "willow" and "leaves of the vine." It is the only major grape that is used for white wine and it is grown in over 20 different countries.
Riesling
A sweet, floral white wine that is well-suited for aging. Riesling is a white wine with a large following and a lot of variety. Riesling comes from Germany and is a sweet, floral, high acid wine that is well-suited for aging. Most of the Riesling sold in the United States is made in Washington State and Riesling is labeled by the year, rather than a specific vintage. The flavor of Riesling is fruitier and more intense than most other white wines. It is also very different from the drier, "international" style of white wine. Riesling is often used as a sweet, dessert wine, although the drier versions are very good and are often used as a wine to pair with food. Riesling is named for the grape varietal and not the color. The wine can be very pale in color or even "white" and can range from off-dry to very sweet. The sweetness of the wine can be affected by the amount of time the wine spends in contact with the grape skins. The wine is often aged in oak barrels to give it a sweeter taste.
Pinot Grigio
A light and refreshing Italian white wine that has notes of citrus and pear. It’s a great wine for summer and also pairs well with a variety of flavors. Pinot Grigio originates from Italy, but is also popular in Australia, New Zealand, and California. It’s a versatile wine that can be enjoyed with fish, poultry, or even pizza and pasta.
Muscat
A sweet, fragrant wine with flavors of citrus and honey. Muscat is a sweet, fragrant wine, made with Muscat grapes. Muscat grapes are a white, green or black grape. They have a sweet, floral and sometimes musky flavor. Muscat is produced in many countries, including Austria, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lebanon, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and the United States. In France, there are three main types of Muscat grapes that are important to the country's wine industry. These grapes are Muscat a Petits Grains, Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains and Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.
