About Las Posadas
Las Posadas (‘the lodgings’), ia a nine-day annual celebration throughout Mexico that takes place between December 16th and December 24th
It honors the journey of Joseph and Mary as they made their way from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
In Mexico, each night, there’s a designated house and a group representing Mary and Joseph, a small child dressed as an angel, leading a procession of children through town.
The group is denied housing at several homes before reaching the designated house, at which point the pilgrims are invited inside, and fun and merrymaking ensue with blindfolded guests trying to break a piñata filled with gifts and goodies suspended from the ceiling. Once the piñata is broken, the gifts are distributed and the celebration continues.
It continues each night with a different designated home.
