About National Flag of Canada Day
National Flag of Canada Day, commonly shortened to Flag Day, is observed annually on February 15th to commemorate the inauguration of the flag of Canada on this day in 1965.
At the stroke of noon on February 15th 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. On the same day in 1996, National Flag of Canada Day was declared.
Even though Canada became nation in 1867, an earlier flag, the "Pearson's Pennant", did not meet with universal approval. A new consensus, based on the maple leaf and national colour, resulted in the "Maple Leaf Flag", which was adopted by Parliament in 1965.
