About World Disabled Day
In 1992, the United Nations called for an international day of celebration for people living with disabilities to be held on December 3rd each year.
The International Day of People With Disabilities is an annual occasion designated to join together to support people with disability in our communities, and raise awareness of the importance of creating a future where people with disabilities experience equal opportunity and face no barriers in all aspects of their lives— whether it be going about their day-to-day lives with adequate accessibility in their communities, joining the workforce, or being able to showcase their abilities and reach their goals without facing barriers.
The day is intended to raise the issue of living with disability in several ways:
A Celebration – to recognize and value the diversity of our global community, and to cherish the role we all play, regardless of our abilities;
A day of Learning – to understand and learn from the experiences of people with living with a disability;
It is a day for optimism – to look towards the future and the creation of a world where a person is not characterised by their disabilities, but by their abilities;
A day of Action – where all people, organisations, agencies and charities not only show their support for International Day of People with Disabilities, but take on a commitment to create a world characterised by equal human rights.Find out more"On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to work together for a better world that is inclusive, equitable and sustainable for everyone, where the rights of people with disabilities are fully realized."
