About National Survivors’ Day
National Survivors’ Day takes place in Australia in November, a week after Melbourne Cup Day.
Recognises and commemorates the courage and journeys of Survivors of Sexual Assault and Institutional Abuse, their Supporters, and whistle-blowers across Australia.
National Survivors’ Day aims to
Acknowledge the profound harm caused to Survivors and the community by sexual assault and institutional abuse.
Support efforts towards de-stigmatisation, and public acceptance of the work undertaken by Survivors and advocates.
Work to improve responses to Survivors and all those impacted by Sexual Assault and Institutional Abuse.
History of National Survivors' Day
In 2022, the In Good Faith Foundation (IGFF) and LOUD Fence Inc. established a National Advisory Committee (NAC) to devise the key components and scope of the Day, including the date, symbolisms, language, and design. The NAC brought together Survivors, family members, whistle-blowers, people living with disabilities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities from across Australia.
How to Celebrate National Survivors’ Day
Please show your support for the entire week by wearing multi-coloured ribbons, tying them to your property in places of prominence such as letterboxes, verandas, and cars and pledging to acknowledge survivors through social media.
Wear a ribbon.
Individuals can choose to wear multi-coloured ribbons to reflect a physical LOUD fence.
Ribbons chosen can be meaningful to the individuals and organisations, demonstrating solidarity and recognition of all people impacted by Sexual Assault and Institutional Abuse.
