About National Pecan Pie Day
Pecan pie is a pie of pecan nuts mixed with a filling of eggs, butter, and sugar. Variations may include white or brown sugar, cane syrup, sugar syrup, molasses, maple syrup, or honey. It is popularly served at holiday meals in the United States and is considered a specialty of Southern U.S. origin.
There are various ideas about the origins of the pecan pie. Some state that the French first made it soon after settling in New Orleans in the 1700s. Other claim pecan pie was initially made in the early 1800s in Alabama. However, no recipes or other culinary literature has been found to support either of those claims.
The first actual pecan pie recipe was written in 1886. Initially, pecans were mixed with custard, boiled, and then poured into a crust and baked.
